Consequences of the consumption of sugar in drinks

Consuming sugary drinks increases the risk of developing a metabolic syndrome by up to 20 percent. Lemonade with a high fructose or fructose content also poses a risk.

When evaluating several studies, it was found that it is important to limit the consumption of sugary drinks in order to avoid health problems and especially the development of a metabolic syndrome. The results were published in the English-language journal "JAMA Network Open".

What is the metabolic syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome includes a group of diseases and symptoms, including high blood pressure, increased blood sugar, excess body fat, and elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Taken together, these diseases increase a person's risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease, the researchers explain.

Data from almost 50,000 people were analyzed

For the current analysis, the team checked the data from studies in which nearly 50,000 people had participated. The metabolic syndrome was diagnosed in more than 14,000 people. Upon review, the researchers found that consuming large amounts of fructose appears to be associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome.

How much increased the risk?

Many lemonades contain fructose or fructose. However, there are differences in the harmfulness of different fructose sources. The current investigation found that drinking beverages with a total fructose content of about 12 ounces (0.34 kg) or more increased the risk of metabolic syndrome by at least 14 percent. On the other hand, eating fresh fruit or 100 percent fruit juice with the same amount of fructose did not increase the risk of a diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome, the researchers report.

Here it becomes clear that sugar is not the same as sugar. And if people relied solely on the sugar content in all their decisions about food consumption, they could miss the nutritional benefits of some foods, the researchers explain.

Guidelines should focus on whole foods

The results of the study show that when developing guidelines for nutrition and diet recommendations, special attention should be paid to whole foods and not only to individual ingredients of food, explains the research group. On the other hand, drinks with a high sugar content should be avoided, even if they are fructose. (as)
