Camelina oil strengthens cardiovascular health
Camelina oil reduces the formation of fatty acid derivatives, which can damage cardiovascular health. In addition, the oil appears to protect against oxidative stress.
The benefits of taking camelina oil and consuming fatty fish were analyzed in a study carried out in cooperation between the University of Eastern Finland and the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. The results of the study were published in the English-language journal “Prostaglandins, Leukotrienes and Essential Fatty Acids”.
In their study of 79 men and women aged 43 to 72 years, the researchers examined the effects of fatty and low-fat fish and Camelina sativa oil (camelina oil) on fat metabolism and mild inflammation. The study lasted twelve weeks and included only participants with impaired fasting blood sugar.
Four groups of participants
The participants were divided into four groups for the study. One group replaced fats in their daily diet with Camelina sativa oil (18 participants) and reduced the consumption of fish to one serving per week. Two of the groups ate fish four times a week, either fatty fish (e.g. salmon; 20 participants) or low-fat fish (e.g. pike; 21 participants). The fourth group was only a control group (20 participants).
What do camelina oil and oily fish do?
Camelina oil (Camelina sativa) and oily fish are both rich in polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids, which are believed to have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. Nevertheless, their health benefits appear to be different.
What were the different protective effects based on?
A high intake of omega-3 fatty acids from camelina oil reduced the proportion of arachidonic acid in the circulation, a long-chain omega-6 fatty acid. When the participants ingested camelina oil, they showed lower concentrations of mediators, which are derived from arachidonic acid and can damage cardiovascular health, the researchers report. However, eating fatty fish has increased the circulating concentration of fatty acid derivatives, which reduce inflammation. Low-fat fish had no positive effects in the study.

In addition, camelina oil was found to reduce the concentration of markers in the bloodstream that indicate oxidative stress.
Dietary fats can affect metabolic pathways
Camelina oil and oily fish both had a major impact on lipid metabolism. And the results of the study show that dietary fats can be used to influence metabolic pathways associated with cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes, the researchers emphasize.
More research is needed
The new results are very promising and support earlier findings on the health benefits of oily fish. The research group concludes that further studies on the effects of fatty fish and Camelina sativa oil are now required. (as)
