How to strengthen your immune system in times of COVID-19
Ayurveda and yoga can help strengthen the immune system and be an effective, accessible, and affordable means of preventing COVID-19 infection.
The current study by researchers at Savitribai Phule Pune University in India concludes that we can use Ayurveda and Yoga to strengthen our immune system, which helps protect against COVID-19. The results were published in the English language journal "The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine" (JACM).
Stronger defenses to protect against COVID-19?
In their research, researchers in traditional Indian medicine describe how the approach of Ayurveda and Yoga can help to strengthen the immune system. Various individual measures and also systemic approaches are assessed in the article with regard to their effectiveness. Some may well be a prophylaxis for COVID-19.
What is Ayurveda?
In western countries Ayurveda is mostly used in the wellness area, but especially in India it is considered an effective healing method. Ayurveda is a holistic system and not an individual therapeutic measure.
Stimulating immune function is a cornerstone of Ayurveda
Ayurveda includes both herbal supplements and measures for a healthy lifestyle in order to better deal with various stress factors and infections. The concept of stimulating immune function is a cornerstone of Ayurvedic practice.
How can we protect our lungs?
The researchers are discussing local prophylaxis, including the use of Ayurvedic practices that help block the entry of the virus into the body and passage into the lungs. This can include, for example, the consumption of hot water, hot dishes, herbal drinks and steam inhalation.
Rasayana therapy to protect against COVID-19
Systemic prophylaxis focuses on the general state of health and includes factors such as nutrition, sleep, mental relaxation, lifestyle and yoga. In the study, the researchers describe, for example, so-called Rasayana therapies, a special Ayurveda method that deals with rejuvenation and can stimulate the immune system. They refer to plants that have been shown to be effective in immunomodulating and restoring immune homeostasis.
Ayurveda and yoga should be better researched
Future research should investigate the possibilities of Ayurveda and Yoga in the prevention of infections in order to subsequently be able to derive recommendations from them, with which each individual can improve his or her protection against infectious diseases. (as)
