New pathogens in a globally networked world

The advent and rapid increase in cases of the Covid-19 infectious disease caused by the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus clearly show that emerging infectious diseases can quickly spread worldwide. This poses complex challenges for global society, public health, the medical community and research. International health professionals report.

Experts from the American National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) explain the challenges that need to be overcome to avert global pandemics. Her report was recently featured in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine.

Can a new virus be stopped?

In response to the rapid spread of the new corona virus, the United States and other countries introduced temporary travel restrictions. The current report suggests that these measures have slowed Covid 19 spread. Nevertheless, according to the experts, everyone should be prepared for Sars-CoV-2 to gain a foothold all over the world sooner or later.

How long does containment make sense?

According to the research team, a containment strategy through travel restrictions only makes sense until the pathogen spreads in the individual communities. If the first chains of infection have already been established, it may make more sense to isolate sick people at home, close schools and promote work from home (home office).

What treatment options are there?

Neither a vaccine nor drugs against Covid-19 are currently available. However, there are numerous vaccine candidates in early clinical trials. New therapeutic agents are also being tested, including an antiviral drug called Remedesivir. Clinical trials on humans have been running since February 21, 2020.

Covid-19 is not a problem for most people

Most sufferers experience only minor complaints, which should be treated with common home remedies for flu and especially through domestic isolation, since Covid-19 is highly contagious. For more information, see the article: Coronavirus infection treatable with home remedies and isolation.

The three pillars: monitoring, diagnosis, research

“The outbreak of COVID-19 is strongly reminiscent of the ongoing challenge of new and re-emerging infectious pathogens, and the need for constant monitoring, quick diagnosis, and solid research to understand and be effective in understanding the basic biology of new organisms and our susceptibility to them To develop countermeasures, ”the researchers sum up.
