How does egg consumption affect the risk of cardiovascular diseases?

The consumption of eggs and their impact on human health have long been the subject of scientific research and discussion. Eggs can be a good source of nutrients, but they are also said to increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. But is that really the case?

Experts repeatedly refer to the healthy nutrients contained in chicken eggs: high-quality protein, valuable minerals and important vitamins. However, high egg consumption should also help to increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. However, the current study situation shows no clear effects of egg consumption on cardiometabolic diseases.

Results of previous studies examined

As the German Society for Nutrition (DGE) writes in a current communication, eggs are rich in high-quality protein and other essential nutrients such as fat-soluble vitamins and minerals. At the same time, the egg yolk is high in fat and cholesterol. An egg of about 60 g contains 240 mg cholesterol.

High egg consumption has long been considered critical, mainly because of its high cholesterol and associated risk of cardiovascular disease.

A recent review, published in the journal "ERNÄHRUNGS UMSCHAU" (part 1 and part 2), has the results of previous meta-analyzes and systematic reviews as well as recent cohort and intervention studies on the relationship between egg consumption and the risk of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus Type 2 and the effects on cardiovascular risk factors were examined.

Focus on the overall quality of the diet

Based on the study results, "no clearly negative, but also no clearly positive, effects of egg consumption on the risk for the examined endpoints can be shown," write the experts.

According to the DGE, due to these contradictory results, no concrete consumption amount for eggs can currently be derived.

Therefore, the focus should not be on a discussion about limit values ​​for egg consumption or the associated cholesterol intake, but on the overall quality of the diet and a healthy lifestyle.

Consume fewer animal foods

However, according to the DGE, an unlimited amount of eggs is not recommended as part of a plant-based diet. Eggs as animal foods can complement the menu and can be part of a wholesome diet.

Eating less animal foods not only has health benefits, it also reduces negative impacts on the environment and the climate. The consumption of resources and the emission of harmful greenhouse gases are significantly higher in the production of animal foods than in the production of plant foods.
