Recall: Falafel and vegan nuggets may contain undeclared allergens
The company Sofine Foods B.V. from the Netherlands has started a recall for falafel balls, vegan SoChicken chopsticks and nuggets. According to the company, the products sold at Edeka, tegut, Marktkauf and Dennree may contain traces of mustard that are not declared on the packaging.
SoFine Foods B.V., based in Landgraaf in the Netherlands, is recalling various vegan foods because they may contain traces of mustard that are not declared on the packaging. These can lead to allergic reactions in people with Senfall energy.
Vegan products can contain traces of mustard
According to a message published by the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety on its portal "lebensmittelwarnung.de", the following articles will be recalled:
- SoFine® SoChicken chopsticks 160g with a best before date from 16.12.2019 to 14.01.2020, sold by Edeka and tegut
- Edeka organic vegan falafel balls 200g with a best before date from December 27th, 2019 to January 24th, 2020, sold by Edeka and Marktkauf
- ProLaTerre® Vegan Nuggets 160g with a best before date from 30.12.2019 to 14.01.2020, sold by Dennree
Other best-before dates and other articles are not affected. “As part of our own checks, it was found that the affected batch may contain traces of mustard that are not declared on the packaging. These can lead to allergic reactions in people with mustard energy, ”the company writes.
The affected trading companies have already taken the goods out of sale as a precaution. Customers who have bought the corresponding product can return it to their shops without a presentation of the sales receipt, upon reimbursement of the purchase price.
Complaints can be very pronounced
As the Medical University (MedUni) Vienna writes on its website, mustard energy is probably the most common allergy to spices.
Symptoms that can arise with a food allergy mostly concern the skin and mucous membranes (e.g. itching), the gastrointestinal tract (e.g. vomiting and diarrhea), the upper and lower respiratory tract (e.g. cough) and the cardiovascular system System (for example, rapid heartbeat or dizziness).
Although the likelihood of getting Senfall energy is very low, the reactions are often very strong. "The symptoms can be very pronounced and can lead to anaphylactic reactions," explains the German Allergy and Asthma Association (DAAB).
According to MedUni Vienna, Senfall energy mostly occurs as a cross allergy or as an additional allergy, very rarely as the only allergy.
Most of the known mustard allergens are heat-stable and digestive-stable and are therefore not destroyed during the production of mustard. (ad)
