Stand up paddling is "in". Anyone who enjoys popular leisure sports not only has fun, but also trains muscles that are otherwise often neglected. Stand-up paddling also helps prevent diseases and is ideal for reducing stress.

Exercise your back and deep muscles

“Stand-up paddling is a real all-rounder. In addition to coordination and balance, the back and deep muscles are trained. It stabilizes the trunk and is important for an upright posture, ”explains Klaus Möhlendick, sports scientist at Barmer in a message. According to the expert, the body balances the movements of the board on the water by alternating numerous different muscles in a fraction of a second to ensure stability on the swaying surface. This would also intensively train the deep muscles, which are otherwise hardly consciously controllable. All you need for the training is a board, similar to a surfboard, a paddle and a body of water nearby.

Paddling against stress and osteoporosis

As the health insurance company announced, stand up paddling is easy to learn for beginners with a little practice. But sports also always offer new experiences to experienced athletes. “Experienced paddlers who are still looking for a challenge can increase the level of difficulty and try yoga or Pilates exercises on the board. In addition, the shorter and narrower the board, the more shaky the stand and the more intensive the training, ”says Möhlendick.

According to the sports scientist, standing paddling is not just something for fitness enthusiasts. People with osteoporosis or knee osteoarthritis would find the sport an alternative to the gym. Here, too, the deep muscles are particularly important. By strengthening it, it in turn supports the bones.

In addition, stand-up paddling differs from many other sports in one essential point, namely when it comes to breaks. On the board you can float calmly, listen to the rippling water and just enjoy nature. Not only the body needs breaks, but also the head. In this way, you can consciously enjoy the time-out from everyday stress and wonderfully slow down. (ad)
