Mettwurst are recalled
The Stübner butcher from the Drebsdorf district in the municipality of Südharz (Saxony-Anhalt) has started a recall for the item "Mettwurst fein". “All sausages that could have been purchased by the consumer between June 5, 2019 and June 28, 2019 will be recalled,” says a message published on the “Lebensmittelwarnung.de” portal by the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety.
Listeria have been identified in tests
Reason for the recall: According to the company, listeria were verified in the course of in-house and official investigations.
"For this reason, health impairments due to consumption cannot be excluded," the company writes.
According to the information, the goods are taken out of circulation.
Customers who have already purchased the sausage can return it and receive the purchase price.
Listeria are rod-shaped bacteria that can trigger so-called “listeriosis” in humans.
In healthy adults, listeriosis "is usually unremarkable or takes a harmless course with flu-like symptoms such as fever and muscle pain or vomiting and diarrhea," explains the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) on its website.
However, certain risk groups such as the elderly or immunocompromised individuals and infants also have severe, sometimes fatal forms of listeriosis.
For pregnant women, the germs pose a special risk because "an infection can lead to stillbirth, premature birth and newborn listeriosis or to inflammation of the brain and meninges as well as sepsis (blood poisoning)", according to the LGL.
According to the experts, these forms of disease are fatal in around 30 percent of cases. (ad)
