Exercise can increase our life expectancy

Exercise is important for human health. Adequate exercise also has a positive impact on our life expectancy. Researchers have now found that older women can significantly improve their life expectancy if they take at least 4,400 steps a day.

The latest study by the internationally recognized Harvard Medical School found that women who move at least 4,400 steps a day benefit from increased life expectancy. The results of the study were published in the English-language journal "JAMA Internal Medicine".

Do you move 10,000 steps every day?

It is usually recommended that people take 10,000 steps a day to maintain their health. Reaching 10,000 steps a day is above all a goal for all people who want to stay fit and active. For many people, however, the number of steps actually performed is far below the goal of 10,000 steps. However, according to the latest findings, older women can already improve their life expectancy by taking less than half of these actually recommended steps.

The risk of premature death was reduced by 41 percent

Pensioners who took 4,400 steps a day had a 41 percent lower risk of death than those who only took 2,700 steps. The risk of premature death continued to decrease up to 7,500 steps a day before the reduction flattened, the researchers report. This is far below the common goal of 10,000 steps.

The study included 16,741 women

A total of 16,741 older women were examined for the study and generally medically monitored for a period of longer than four years. The participants had an average age of 72 years. 504 of the participating women died during the investigation. 275 of the affected participants had only walked an average of 2,700 steps a day. These women were among the 25 percent who had moved the least
