Prevent breast cancer with fruit, vegetables and coffee?

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and despite relatively good treatment options when discovered at an early stage, breast cancer leads to more than 17,500 deaths annually in Germany. Prevention is therefore of particular importance. A research team of Spanish and American scientists has now investigated a possible preventive effect of so-called polyphenols in breast cancer and found that the compounds found in fruit, vegetables, coffee and red wine, for example, massively reduce the risk of postmenopausal illness.

Numerous factors influence the risk of breast cancer, although the rate of illness increases with age. According to the Robert Koch Institute's figures, 30 percent of the diseases affect women under the age of 55, but most breast cancer cases can be found in postmenopausal women. According to the current study, they in particular could significantly reduce their risk of developing diseases by taking polyphenols.

Study with around 11,000 participants

At the European Congress on Obesity in Glasgow, Andrea Romanos Nanclares' research team from the Universidad de Navarra (Spain) presented the results of a study that was published in the British Journal of Nutrition magazine at the end of last year. The researchers had investigated possible connections between polyphenol intake and breast cancer risk using around 11,000 middle-aged Spanish university graduates. Various phenolic acids including hydroxycinnamic acid and hydroxybenzoic acid were taken into account.

What are polyphenols?

The researchers explain that polyphenols are a large family of phytochemicals that are found in various foods. Rich sources include raspberries, blueberries, apples, citrus fruits, plums, onions, cocoa, whole wheat, rice, corn, oats as well as coffee and red wine. In various in-vivo and in-vitro studies, the polyphenols have been associated with favorable properties and potentially protective mechanisms. “They could play a role in the development and progression of cancer,” the researchers suspect. “In a prospective cohort study, we therefore wanted to assess the relationship between the total intake and the main classes of polyphenol intake with the risk of breast cancer,” reports the research team.

Initially, no connection was found

After an average observation period of more than ten years, 168 probable breast cancer cases were identified and 100 diseases confirmed. The evaluation of the intake of polyphenols, which was also recorded, initially did not provide any evidence for a connection between the total intake of polyphenols and the overall risk of breast cancer. However, looking at the different ages, the researchers found that "there was a significant inverse relationship between total polyphenol intake and breast cancer risk for post-menopausal women."

Women after menopause benefit significantly

For example, the polyphenols from fruit, vegetables and coffee appear to have a significant protective effect in postmenopausal breast cancer, but they do not offer any advantages to women before menopause in this regard. So-called chlorogenic acids, a type of hydroxycinnamic acid found in coffee, but also in artichokes, potatoes and nettles, for example, have been found to be particularly effective. The women who consumed the most of them had a 65 percent lower risk compared to those who consumed the least, the researchers report. Further studies are now needed to analyze the effects of polyphenols in postmenopausal breast cancer in more detail. (fp)
