Lidl olive oil performs extremely poorly in the test due to mineral oil residues
The consumer magazine “Öko-Test” examined olive oils from various suppliers. It was found that not a few oils are contaminated with residues of mineral oils and harmful substances. The "Primadonna Extra Virgin Olive Oil" with the addition of "extra virgin" promises high quality for the small budget and has been sold by Lidl for years. In the current test, the oil was one of the worst places.
Primadonna Extra Virgin Olive Oil fails in the test
The Primadonna Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Lidl is one of the products in the olive oil test that is particularly negative. The taste and fragrance of the oil are inharmonic and the olive oil is also heavily contaminated with problematic mineral oil compounds.
It is strongly advised not to eat Lidl olive oil
Due to the massive mineral oil residues, the oil scored insufficiently in the test. Consumption is strongly discouraged. However, eight other olive oils have achieved poor or insufficient levels.
Inharmonious taste and smell were striking
The experts who tasted all the olive oils rated the Lidl olive oil with the harmony grade 4.4. That means it is “rather inharmonic”. The best oil in the test scored “very good”. The experts found missing notes for four olive oils. As a result, the oils tasted rancid or pungent and should not have been sold in the “extra virgin” quality class.
Serious mineral oil residues found in Lidl olive oil
Lidl's Primadonna Extra Virgin Olive Oil is also heavily contaminated with mineral oil residues. A laboratory found relatively high amounts of the saturated hydrocarbons MOSH and / or POSH. The body deposits MOSH in the liver, lymph nodes, spleen and adipose tissue. What this means for the function of the organs affected has not yet been clarified. POSH has hardly been researched at the moment.
In addition, aromatic mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOAH) were also detectable in the Lidl oil. The MOAH may contain carcinogenic and genotoxic substances. Industry, consumer advocates and politicians agree that this group of substances has no place in food. In the test, MOAH was detected in 10 out of 20 olive oils.
Lidl has stopped selling the olive oil batch
Lidl has stopped selling Primadonna olive oil with batch L0248E. A sensory check confirmed the non-compliance with the specified olive oil profile. Lidl then provided its own expert opinion on the oil concerned. In the report, no MOAH was detected for an olive oil from the same batch as that from Öko-Test. In addition, according to her report, Lidl determined a harmony value of 4.0 and thus a different one than in the Öko-Test.
Conclusion and test winner
Öko-Test concludes that out of 20 olive oils tested, only two can be recommended. In addition to smears in taste and smell, the considerable mineral oil finds were criticized, because every second olive oil is particularly strikingly contaminated with mineral oil residues.
The test winner was the oil from “Rapunzel Crete Extra Virgin Olive Oil”. According to the test, this oil was free of mineral oil and other harmful substances. The testers gave a clear note: medium-fruity, clearly bitter and pungent taste. The smell was also excellent.

All nutritional and health-related information must comply with the legal rules. The imprint "cholesterol-free" or "rich in linoleic acid" means that the calorific value and nutritional values must be specified according to certain specifications.
The indication "cold pressed" means that the pressing took place below 27 degrees Celsius.
Dark glass bottles protect olive oil and its nutrients much better from oxidation by light. Glass bottles or metal containers are preferable to plastic bottles - which can often still be found directly at the small direct marketer in holiday countries.
Finally, the information "Protected geographical area" or "Protected area of origin" is evidence of a secure origin.
