Why adipose tissue favors cancer and what can be done about it

Obesity is becoming a widespread disease. According to the German Cancer Aid, around 67 percent of men and more than every second woman in Germany are now considered overweight. A quarter is in the area of ​​obesity. Even the children weigh too many kilograms early on. Around 15 percent are overweight. This is not a cosmetic problem. Experts warn that increased body weight is now one of the most important preventable causes of cancer.

In the first place, an excessively high body weight arises as a result of a regularly excessive calorie intake, often coupled with an inactive lifestyle that is characterized by a lack of exercise. On the day of healthy eating, CEO of the German Cancer Aid Gerd Nettekoven points out that being overweight is an illness-causing condition and increases the risk of colon cancer and many other types of tumor. This risk is avoidable. Exercise and, above all, the right nutrition can prevent cancer in many cases.

Why is obesity so harmful to the body?

As the experts from the German Cancer Aid explain, adipose tissue is the largest hormonally active organ in the body. With overweight and obesity, the entire hormone metabolism of the body changes unfavorably for health. In addition, the adipose tissue increasingly produces messenger substances that trigger and promote inflammation in the body. "Both are factors that increase the risk of cancer," writes the German Cancer Aid in a current press release.

What are the risks of being overweight?

"At least 13 types of cancer are favored by an excess of body fat," says the cancer aid. These include widespread tumor diseases such as colorectal cancer, breast cancer, cancer in the endometrium, in the ovaries, bile, kidney and pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, tumors in the stomach, in the thyroid, esophagus, brain tumors and multiple myeloma. Experts estimate that almost seven percent of all cancer cases result from being overweight and around six percent from lack of exercise.

Everyone can actively reduce their risk

A lot can be changed through diet alone. The German Cancer Aid recommends paying attention to the following aspects when eating and drinking:

  • Buy little processed foods,
  • Prepare meals from fresh ingredients if possible,
  • severely restrict high-calorie, high-fat and high-sugar products,
  • regularly eat whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits,
  • avoid sweetened drinks as much as possible,
  • Reduce alcohol - it contains a lot of calories and also promotes cancer.

Exercise also lowers the risk of cancer

In addition to nutrition, regular exercise is an important factor in keeping your risk of cancer low. "If you are overweight, reduce your weight and never gain any weight," warns the German Cancer Aid. Instead, you should integrate regular movements into everyday life - at least 30 minutes a day. For example, you can reduce the risk of colon cancer by 20 to 30 percent. Long sitting periods at a time should also be avoided. If you sit for a long time due to work or privately, you should get up and move around regularly. For example, you can make calls while standing. (vb)
