Valuable nutrients

"Eat milk and milk products such as yogurt and cheese every day," writes the German Nutrition Society (DGE) in its ten rules for healthy eating. Elsewhere, the experts point out that milk contains valuable nutrients such as high-quality proteins, B vitamins, calcium and various trace elements for the human body. But not all experts are convinced of the health benefits. Prof. Dr. Bodo Melnik from the University of Osnabrück is one of the strongest critics of milk consumption. Compared to the "Vegan World" portal, the doctor explains why milk can harm people.

Healthy or unhealthy?

Milk used to be the epitome of healthy eating. But there is now a dispute over whether milk is healthy or harmful.

Milk is said to strengthen bones and teeth, among other things, due to the calcium it contains. Researchers also reported in the magazine "Circulation" that milk with a high fat content can reduce the risk of diabetes.

And Canadian scientists published a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, which showed that whole milk is much healthier for children than low-fat milk.

Mainly because children who drink whole milk are leaner and have higher vitamin D values ​​than those who drink low-fat or skim milk.

Negative effects of milk consumption

On the other hand, there are also studies that milk consumption may also promote diseases such as asthma.

In addition, scientific studies have shown that milk drinkers are more prone to osteoporosis or indigestion.

According to the current state of research, these health risks are usually not clearly proven. The white matter is therefore neither clearly dangerous nor harmless.

Nevertheless, there are good reasons to forego milk consumption, says Prof. Bodo Melnik from the University of Osnabrück.

Humans don't stop drinking milk

"Milk is not a product," the medical doctor told the "Vegan World" portal.

“Milk is a highly complex signal substance for the care of a newborn. The signal is growth, ”said the expert, who pointed out that milk can also be understood as“ a kind of doping ”.

Newborn mammals are given milk to grow, but at some point they stop drinking it - humans don't.

Instead, the growth stimulant is consumed in excess. "And yes, with cancer in mind, growth is a negative stimulus," said Prof. Melnik.

According to the expert, this also explains that dairy products increase the risk of prostate cancer. Vegan life, on the other hand, can significantly reduce this risk.

Manipulate human genetics

The doctor also pointed out that milk also contains so-called microRNA, ie genetic particles with a gene-regulating effect; many of them are bioactive across the species boundary.

According to the expert, the high consumption of cow's milk products could manipulate our own genetics.
